چکیده

We are in the process of obtaining a complete sample of exploratory X-ray observations of broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS). This survey is composed of short (5– 7 ks) Chandra ACIS-S3 observations designed to significantly constrain X-ray fluxes and hardness ratios. Our sample avoids the selection biases of some previous surveys while providing X-ray data of similar quality. Of 17 BAL QSOs observed to date, 13 are detected. In general, our results are consistent with absorption as the primary cause of X-ray weakness in BAL QSOs. As found by Green et al. (2001), those BAL QSOs with low-ionization absorption lines are found to be notably X-ray weaker than BAL QSOs with only high ionization lines.

An Exploratory Chandra Survey of a Well-defined Sample of 35 Large Bright Quasar Survey Broad Absorption Line Quasars

We present 4–7 ks Chandra observations of 35 Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey, the largest sample of sensitive, 0.5–8.0 keV X-ray observations of this class of quasars to date. The limited ranges in both redshift (z = 1.42–2.90) and ultraviolet luminosity (a factor of ≈ 12) of the sample also make it relatively uniform. Of 35 targets, 27 are detected for a...

The Frequency and Radio Properties of Broad Absorption Line Quasars

A sample of 67 Broad Absorption Line quasars (BALQSOs) from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS) is used to estimate the observed and intrinsic fraction of BAL quasars in optically– selected samples at intermediate (BJ ≃ 18.5) magnitudes. The observed BALQSO fraction in the redshift range 1.5 ≤ z ≤ 3.0 is 15± 3%. A well–determined, empirical, k–correction, to allow for the differences in the s...

Rosat Soft X-ray Properties of the Large Bright Quasar Survey: Modeling of Stacked X-ray Spectra

We develop and apply a novel method of analysis to study the X-ray spectral properties of 908 QSOs in the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS) that were observed during the soft X-ray ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). Due to the relatively short (600 s) RASS exposure times, only 10% of the QSOs are detected in X-rays, so X-ray spectral model ts for individual QSOs are precluded by poor photon statistic...

The FIRST Radio-Loud Broad Absorption Line QSO and Evidence for a Hidden Population of Quasars

We have discovered two low-ionization broad absorption line quasars in programs to obtain optical spectra for radio-selected quasar candidates from the VLA FIRST Survey (Becker, White, & Helfand 1995). Both belong to the extremely rare class of BAL QSOs that exhibit narrow absorption lines from

X-ray Insights into the Physics of Mini-bal Quasar Outflows

We examine the UV and X-ray properties of 256 radio-quiet SDSS quasars (QSOs) observed in X-rays with Chandra and/or XMM-Newton in order to study the relationship between QSOs with broad C IV absorption lines (BALs; width > 2000 km s) and those with C IV mini-BALs (here defined to have widths of 1000–2000 km s). Our sample includes 42 BAL and 48 mini-BAL QSOs. The relative X-ray brightness and ...
